Buzz - a narrative by Ryan

Once upon a time there was a bee called Buzz. He lived in a hive over grass fields. One day he went to collect nectar. He started to feel sad because he didn't have a friend.

After a few minutes he went back to his hive. The next day he went on an adventure for a friend. He looked through bushes and logs and flowers. But then he realised he was lost.

Buzz looked for the way home but he couldn't see through all the fog. Then se saw another bee in a bush sleeping. He woke him up by stepping on a stick. CRACK went the stick. Then they became friends and they decided to work together.

Then they started to get hungry. Buzz started to see a hive glowing in the dark so they went inside. They realised that it was a restaurant. Then someone came over with some honey.

When they were done they kept on looking for the hive. Then Buzz saw his Mum and Dad calling to them so they lived happily ever after.

New World Supermarket Visit

On Thursday the 16th of May Room 5 went to New World Supermarket. We went because we are learning about 'Made to Market'. We had to wear hair nets on our heads so we wouldn't get hair in the food. Ryan and James

New World Supermarket Visit - Butchery

In the butchery there were carcasses around the back. The front of the butchery is where they cut up the meat and package the meat so the customers buy the meat to eat it for tea. There are machines that help them. It was cool in the butchery. Patrick, William and Damian

New World Super Market Visit - Bakery

At our New World visit we looked through the bakery. There was a lady that showed us how to decorate cupcakes. These are the decorations that we saw. A red Elmo and a blue Cookie Monster and a flower cupcake too. Also a butterfly and a spider. Mia's favourite one was the spider, Jaylee's favourite one was Elmo and Caitlins favourite one was Elmo as well. The bakery was really fun. There were lots of yummy cupcakes. A toaster is a device that cooks bread.

 

A toaster needs power because otherwise it won't work.  Next you put the bread into the slots that are in the middle of the toaster.  Then you push the button down and the heater goes on so it heats up the bread.  Then the springs pop up so then you pull the toast out.

 

My favourite topping is marmite.

A toaster needs to be plugged in because it needs power to work.  The slots in the top of the toaster are what you put your bread in.  The lever on the side of your toaster is what you push down.  The lever does three things.  It makes the springs go flat and that makes the bread go down.  The lever also turns the heater on to make the bread turn into toast.  The lever turns the timer on.  The timer goes on for as long as you want it to go for. 

 

My favourite topping is chocolate jam.  Here is a safety tip.  You never stick a metal fork or knife in a toaster when the toaster is plugged in because you will get an electric shock.

First you put the bread into the slots but do not forget to plug the cord in or it will not work because a toaster needs electricity.  Then press the magic button down because it does three things.  One of them is put the springs down so that all the bread is in the toaster.  Another thing that the button does is put the heater on so the bread gets cooked.  The last thing that the button does is starts the timer so the bread will not burn.  Then you wait for the bread to pop.  POP!  Now the bread pops and if you look at it, it is toast.

I was excited last Thursday when I woke up because I was in the 100 metres final and it was Windsor North School’s Sports Day.

First we went to shot-put.  A shot-put is round like a soccer ball.  To throw a shot-put you need to hold it under your chin then throw. 

After shot-put we had discus.  A discus looks like a pancake.  Here are some tips.  Put your pointing hand out then swing your other arm then throw.

The next event was long jump.  The best bit was when I jumped into the sand pit.  I jumped a long way.

After lunch we did high jump.  At high jump I got two turns but I knocked the bar off both times.  I think high jump was the hardest.

I was in the 100 metre final.  The whole school watched!  My Dad and Pop were there to watch.

I had the best day at school.

Kouta

What a fantastic day on Athletics Day.  It was sunny like I was touching the sun.  I was sweating.  I didn’t have a drink because my Mum didn’t bring a drink bottle so I was thirsty, thirsty, thirsty.

First we did shot-put.  The shot-put looks like a cricket ball and you have to put it under your chin and push, whoosh!

Second I rushed to discus.  I was nearly last in the line.  You have to throw the discus.  Mrs Dawson and Mr Goodsir were the teachers.  We held the discus and threw the discus.  You have to squeeze your fingers and throw.  It was amazing and it was fun.

Next we flew to long jump and made an enormous line.  When it was my turn I threw myself into the air and it was fun.

We had lunch and then we played for a little while, then we shot off to high jump.  I was surprised because it was so high.  So I got ready to jump and when it was my turn I zoomed as fast as I could and did an enormous scissor jump.  I made it over the bar. 

Finally we watch the sprints and I was sad because I wanted to go in the sprints. 

Sports day was absolutely awesome.

What an awesome sports day, Thursday the 7^th of March.  All of Windsor North School were doing Athletics day.  Athletics day was full of sports.  We did Athletics day to have fun and keep fit.  We did it on the back field at Windsor North School. 

Our first event was shot-put.    You held the shot-put by your chin and you had to throw by pushing your arm.  The shot-put was one kilogram.  I threw my shot-put at the ground by accident but I got another go and I did a good shot.

Next we did discus.  You had to stretch you had to stretch your fingers around the discus and go 1, 2, 3, whoosh!  I threw my discus at the ground.  I was surprised that it hit the ground.  The teachers let me have another go.  That time it was a good throw.  I thought the discus looked like a dvd.  I liked discus.

Then we did long jump.  We had to run up and jump into the sky then land in the sand.  The sand was tickly and soft on my toes. 

After lunch we did high jump.  We had to put one leg over first and then the other leg and jump.  When everyone had a go they made it higher.  Soon we were jumping as high as the ten year olds.  When we jumped over the bar we landed on a soft crash pad.

After that I had to watch the running people.  There were lots of people crowding the race.

Next I went home and I felt proud about doing all the sport.

James

What an exciting Athletics Day.  We did it on the back field on the 7^th of March.  The whole school was doing it.

First we did shot-put.  I was waiting for my turn.  When it was my turn I was scared.  I did my first turn, it went plop!  I said “what?” in my head, but the teacher said to pick it up again so I did.  That time it went whoosh.  I was happy!

We zoomed off to discus.  Mr Goodsir taught us how to do it.  To throw a discus you put your fingers around it and 1, 2, 3!  Whoosh it went and I felt proud.  It looked like a dvd.

Then we went to long jump.  There was a long line but then it was my turn.  I zoomed off.  I jumped, I was like superman.  I felt proud.  When I jumped in the sand it felt like whiskers.

Next it was lunch time.  After that we did high jump.  I had my turn.  I looked like scissors.  I hurt myself but it was cool.

Go!  Go!  That was the sound of people cheering.  The final event was running.  There were Mums and Dads proud for their children.  That was the final event.

I liked sports day, it was fun because I did my best.

 

Meadow

“Oh oh”, I said when I got up.  It is athletics day today – real athletics day!  It was Thursday the 7^th of March.  The whole school was there.  We had athletics day because we can keep fit, have fun and have a try.  We had it on the back field.
 

First we went to shot-put.  Plop, plop and plop went the shot-put.  The shot-put was as heavy as concrete.  It was my turn and that was the sound of the shot-put.  You had to put the shot-put under your chin and then throw it. You had to put a lot of weight on your back leg.  I didn’t do very well but I still had a lot of fun.
 

After shot-put we zoomed off to discus.  Mr Goodsir was teaching the seven year old boys and Mrs Dawson and Mrs Horrel were teaching the seven year old girls.  It was like a frisbee because it was a circle.  I thought I did pretty well.
 

Next we flew off to long jump.  Mrs Scott and Mrs Christie were teaching it.  You had to push off on your strong leg.  It was like being a super hero but I wasn’t because I did not do very well.  When I landed in the sand it felt itchy.  It was my favourite event.
 

After long jump we had a little break for lunch.  After lunch we went to high jump.  Mrs Harvey and Mr du Mez were teaching it.  I did very well.  It was my least favourite sport because I was scared of jumping over the bar onto the mattress.  It felt great.
 

After high jump it was the most exciting part of all!  The Sprints!!  Already, it came so fast.  From Room 5 the boy in the 60 metre sprint was Patrick and in the 100 metres the boys were Henry and Patrick.  I cheered for both of them.  From Room 5 girls, Lucy and Amelia were both the 100 metre and Amelia was in the 60 metre as well.
 

I was exhausted when I got home.  I went to the freezer and got two packs of peas to put on my forehead and my back.  I thought sports day was fun but tiring. 

 

Amelia

“Go, go, go!”  We were cheering for our friends in the finals. 

Well last Thursday on the 7^th of March we had sports day.  We had it on the back field.  We did it to get fit.  The whole school did it.

First we did shot put.  It was super-duper heavy!  Just like an elephant.  It was shaped like a baseball.  You throw it by holding it under your chin then push!  It was a good throw.

 

Next event was discus.  I was glad it was discus.  I’m good at it.  How to hold a discus – you put your finger tips over the edge then swing it twice then WOOSH on the third!  My throw went well.

After discus we went to long jump.  How you jump, you run up to the mat and then you push off with your arms behind your back and knees up.  My turn was AWESOME!  When I got out of the sandpit there was sand between my toes, it felt itchy.  My Grandma saw my AWESOME jump!

The second last event was high jump.  I wasn’t so sure how I would get on so I wasn’t too excited.  Anyway this is how you do high hump.  You run up to the bar then you jump up with your bottom in the air.  I jumped well when I jumped.  I landed on a soft crash pad.

Yay my favourite event, the sprints!  The sprints were my favourite because I was in them!  I was in the sixty metres and one hundred metres.  The first race was the sixty metres.  I came forth in the sixties and third in the hundreds.  I was SO proud of myself!  Yes!  I was in the Avenal Zones, and that’s how proud I was.

Beep, beep, beep, bong!  My hand slammed on my alarm clock.  “Time to get up darling”, shouted Mum.  I groaned.  Not another school day!  I looked at my calendar….. Bulging mushrooms!  It’s Sports Day!  I was feeling so nervous, I nearly jumped right out of my skin!  But Mum dragged me off to school anyway!!!

Our first event was shot-put.  I was the fourth or fifth one to have a go.  I was kind of scared of the big, well not big, but heavy shot put!!!  Oh, oh!  It’s my go.  Here goes nothing!  Heeeave!  Whoops!  My foot went out of the boundary.  Oh well, maybe next time.

Tweet, tweet, tweeted the whistle.  It was time to go to the next event.  Our next event was discus.  I was the fourth or fifth person to have a go again.  This is how to throw a discus.  First you put your palm flat on top of the discus.  Then you squeeze onto the discus.  After that you bring the hand that’s holding the discus to the hand that’s aiming.  You do this three times.  Then you let it go.  Wowsers!  The discus went flying in the air, but it didn’t land very far!  How could this day get any worse!  Tweet!  Oh, now I see, long jump.  Another one of my weaknesses!

The seven year old girls had to sit with the boys.  At last!  It was the girls go.  We lined up.  Soon it was my go.  I tried to run faster than a leopard, or a cheetah.  I got to the jump… I landed in the middle, NOT!!!

 

Beeeep screamed the bell!  Thank goodness for the bell.  I had a really special lunch because my Mum came over to have lunch with me.

 

It was time for my most favourite event, high jump.  I did very well because I came fourth or fifth.

 

Now for the final event.  SPRINTS!  These are the people from Room 5 that were running; Amelia, Patrick, Lucy and Henry.  The boys were at the starting line…. CLAP!  After the boys went, the girls went.

 

I was so tired that I almost died.  Luckily Mum bought me ice-cream.

This year we are in the Middle Syndicate and everything has changed!  In the Middle Syndicate we have real desks, a new playground, helping hands, treasure hunts and lots of time on the computers.  We are enjoying being Year 3s because we do lots of fun things.  By Grace

Last year we had normal desks.  They were boring but... when we came into Room 5 we had real desks!  On our first day we got to... SLAM our desk lids for thirty seconds, wow what a lot of noise.  There is a rule not to go in other peoples' desks.  Inside our desks we have all our school supplies.  Now we are Middle Syndicate people.  It's nice being a Middle person.  By William and Amelia

In Room 5 we get lots of time on the computers.  We use new games called E Ako Maths, Spelling City and Sunshine Online.  We use headphones.  We are getting more computers and i pads soon.  We made pie graphs that showed how many boys, girls and teachers are in Room 5.  We made them using the COW.  COW stands for computers on wheels.  By Meadow and Max

We have helping hands in Room 5.  The VIPs are the main helpers over the week.  They are leaders, choose songs and take messages.  We also have helpers to keep the class tidy and lunch order monitors.   We will have a job to do every second week.

In Room 5 we sit in groups of 6.  The names of the groups are Liquorice Allsorts, Lollipops, Jelly Beans and Gum Balls.  We get points for co-operating with others and for answering sticky questions.  When the marbles are gone we count to see which group has the most marbles and they get ten minutes on the playground.

Treasure Hunt and Treasure Box
Everyday three children will get a treasure hunt.  If one child finds the treasure, they will get to go in the treasure box and get a treat.  The numbers will help you guess where the treasure is.  The treasure is hard to find.  It is different for us because last year we didn't have treasure hunts.

In the Junior Syndicate we started to sell chocolate because we were raising money for the new Middle Playground that was being built. My Dad's name is Phillip. He is part of the school board. Since my Dad is part of the school board, my Dad helped build the Middle Playground. I helped too. We had to keep on going back and forth from the tip and shops for the equiment for the playground. When I watched the playground, I kept on asking Dad if I could play on it. He said "maybe."   But I guess that meant no! The first thing that was built was the rock climbing wall. The second thing was the slide. It probably took a whole year to build the Middle Playground! Now it is all built, and now we are in the Middle Syndicate! This year we are allowed on the back field and the best thing about that is climbing the trees.  The best trees are the one in the corner and the one that is nearest to the line in the grass.  We swing on the branches and we can climb so high that we can see every classroom in the school!  We find water in little pools in the trunk of the tree.

Every two weeks we have a Middle Syndicate Assembly.  Children from Rooms 5, 9, 10 and 12 take turns at leading the assemblies.  The teachers choose spotters and the spotters look for the class who will get the Middle Syndicate Shield.  At the assemblies we get to share our work.  To get the Middle Syndicate Shield your class has to sit up straight and sing nicely.  By Caitlin and Jaylee

 Every Friday we go to the library and we find good books.  If we bring the same books back on Friday we can get two more books out.  If we are not finished a book we can keep it for another week and just get one new book out.  We get one book for our desk and one book for home.  The desk book is a chapter book.
